Why Ankang?
Ankang is often described as Shaanxi’s ‘water town’ because of the Han River, a major tributary of the Yangtze. The city’s economy is anchored in agriculture—particularly selenium-rich tea, rice, and mushrooms—and in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) cultivation and processing. The local government has promoted the selenium industry and eco-tourism, with projects around the Han River and the Qinling mountains.
For foreign founders, Ankang’s appeal lies in its lower costs for office space and labor compared to Xi’an, and its improving transport links. The Ankang Fuqiang Airport offers flights to several major Chinese cities, and expressways connect to Xi’an, Chongqing, and Wuhan. The Han River provides waterway transport, though mainly for freight.
If your business relates to agriculture, food processing, TCM, or tourism, Ankang can be a strategic base. However, the city is smaller and less international than Xi’an, so you may need to rely on local partners or staff for operations. Setting up a company here requires understanding the local regulatory environment, which is why many foreign investors use professional services.
